A Level Geography at Brentwood Ursuline Convent High School

Course description

Candidates study human and physical geography. they consider their own values and attitudes to the issues being studied and support their learning of ideas through the use of case studies.

Candidates will also undertake a variety of fieldwork activities and develop a variety of geographical skills. these broaden and deepen existing knowledge and are useful in lifelong learning.

At AS the key topics are river management, coasts, population change and health issues. At A2 the key topics are plate tectonics, weather and climate, world cities and development and globalisation issues.

AS Level (Year 12) Unit 1 Physical and Human geography Written paper 2 hours. Short structured and extended questions. AS 70% A2 35%

Unit 2 geographical skills Written paper 1 hour. Structured questions on geographical skills and fieldwork. AS 30% A2 15%

A2 Level (Year 13) Unit 3 Contemporary geographical issues Written paper 2 hours. Short structured and extended questions and an essay. A2 30%

Unit 4 geographical Fieldwork investigation Written paper 1½ hours. Structured questions based on fieldwork and geographical skills A2 20%

Entry requirements

To succeed in this course students will need to have attained: 5A* to C GCSE grades including English and Maths, preferably with a B grade in Geography.
