Media Studies AS Level at Collingwood College

Course description

You will learn analytical, evaluative and practical skills in the study of one of the most powerful and influential institutions of our time – the mass media. Practical work is very popular within the course and you will benefit from access to state of the art technical facilities in the Sixth Form Centre that include a studio space and dedicated editing suite for research and practical production. The new media specification will allow you to integrate media theory and practice with a focus on new technologies. Media students enjoy the opportunity to critically explore areas of their own interest.

Course content

The AS specification has 2 units:

Unit 1: Investigating Media - four compulsory short answer questions based on one unseen piece of stimulus material; and one essay question from a choice of two.
Unit 2: Creating Media - two linked production pieces; written evaluation on both.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C (or equivalent).


Unit 1: Written paper - 1 hour 30 minutes
Weighting: 50% of AS mark/25% of total A level mark

Unit 2: Internally assessed
Weighting: 50% of AS mark/25% of total A level mark

Future opportunities

There are many media courses at level 4, further education and university. This broad subject offers many careers including journalism, management, advertising and marketing, market research, tv/film/radio director or specialist, public relations, web design/management, publicist.
