Amenity Horticulture Apprenticeship (Level 2 or 3) at Askham Bryan College

Course description

Work-based learning and assessment at your place of work with some college based study. Learners must be in a paid work placement to commence an apprenticeship programme. The work-based route involves practising and demonstrating a range of practical and knowledge-based skills.

Learners would usually enter at the Level 2 Apprenticeship stage before progressing to the Level 3 Apprenticeship. Those who are employed in the industry and have an increased level of responsibility may also be considered for the Level 3 Apprenticeship.

Course content

Course Themes*:

• Hand-held powered and non-powered tools and equipment

• Establishing and maintaining plants

• Preparing sites for landscaping

• Seeding and planting preparation

• Pests, diseases and control

• Plant identification

• Estimate and programme resource requirements

• Plan and manage the control of pests, diseases and disorders

• Specify the maintenance of landscapes

• Maintain and develop decorative horticultural features

• English and maths provision where applicable

*Course themes will be dependent and relevant to apprenticeship course level.



Entry requirements

Level 2 Apprenticeship: Level 1 Maths and English equivalent to GCSE grade 2 (old GCSE grade E) or above, plus suitable and relevant employment and will be expected to work towards Level 2 Maths and English where this has not been achieved.

Level 3 Apprenticeship: Usually a Level 2 work-based qualification (Intermediate Apprenticeship) or considerable work experience, plus suitable employment.  Applicants must be capable of achieving, or have achieved, Level 2 Maths and English.



Portfolio of work assessed throughout deomstrating practical competence and  knowledge-based aspects.
