Mechanical Engineering - Level 3 Extended Diploma at Middlesbrough College

Course description

This BTEC qualification provides opportunities for students who intend to progress to university or employment. This often gives university entrants an advantageous start over those using an academic route. Alternatively the student may look to move into employment with this qualification demonstrating to prospective employers the experiences gained at a Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering. The course is modular based and will allow the students to explore new and existing technologies with a mixture of theoretical and practical skills developed to enhance the student experience. Students will also experience the new STEM centre with additional training adding further employability skills to your CV including Health and Safety in practice, risk assessments, work permits, working at height, working in confined spaces, manual handling and 1st aid at work and more specialist training in year 2 in a real working environment of STEM

Course content

Mandatory Modules: Health and Safety, Mechanical Principles, Mathematics for Technicians, Engineering project, Communications for Technicians, Additional modules: Engineering materials, Computer Aided Drafting, Secondary finishing techniques, Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulic devices, Primary Forming, Engineering Drawing, Thermodynamics, Advanced Mechanical Principles, Further Maths for Technicians, Further mechanical Principles, Engineering Design, Application of mechanical systems

Entry requirements

Students must have 4 GCSE grades at C or above including Maths, English, Science and one other "If you do not have a Grade A to C in English and/or Maths, you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your Study Programme."


All assessments are by way of internally set assignments or time constrained tests per module

During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for University we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance. Level 4 HNC Mechanical Engineering dependent on the level of achievement and interview or study a Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
