Business at Calder High School

Course description

BTEC National Business Subsidiary Diploma is an interesting and exciting course of study. It is designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of sectors. They have been developed to provide the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to prepare learners for employment and/or to provide career progression opportunities to those already in work. It also equips learners for future study at University.

The BTEC Nationals give opportunities to learners to:

 Acquire technical and employability skills, knowledge and understanding

 Gain a nationally recognised qualification to enter employment

 Develop key skills in a wider range of contexts that are transferable in the world of work

 Demonstrate innovation in the completion of coursework modules

 Develop teamwork skills and the enthusiasm and motivation to succeed in the world of work

We have high expectations of you and expect you to do well. This will only happen if you work hard and have the ability to work independently. For example, for Unit 1 you will be required to listen to the news and read newspapers in order to comment on the current economic climate. If you don’t do this then you won’t do well in the course.

Course content

This qualification focuses on particular aspects of employment within the Business sector. The BTEC National Certificate, Advanced Subsidiary is a qualification which can extend a learner’s programme of study and provide vocational emphasis for learners following an Applied GCE or GCE route or a combination of both in their main programme of study. Each unit consists entirely of coursework. A range of units are taught including:

Year 1

Unit 1 Business Environment

Unit 2 Business Resources

Unit 4 Effective People, Communication and Information

Year 2

Unit 3 Introduction to Marketing

Unit 5 Introduction to Accounting

Unit 9 Product Promotion

Entry requirements

GCSE grade C or above in English

Be prepared to work independently and adhere to deadlines
