Statistics at Maiden Erlegh School

Course description

The course is designed to enable you to further develop the skills necessary to construct statistical models of real world situations and interpret the outcomes of your model. For example: Can we use weather records from previous months to predict the effect on the profit level of a shop if it rains?

Over a long period of time on average three accidents per month happen at a road junction. In August there are six accidents; is this sufficient evidence to suggest the accident rate has increased?

A test for a disease is positive 95% of the time if the person being tested has the disease and 3% of the time if they don’t. How good a test is this?

Statistics is ideal for students who need mathematical skills to support their other subjects. The course does not involve topics such as algebra, trigonometry and calculus. Suitable Subject Combinations: Statistics combines well with subjects like Biology, Business, Geography and Sociology.
