Chemistry A Level at North Bromsgrove High School

Course description

The course involves a study of the fundamental processes behind a huge range of natural and manmade phenomena, and provides a range of skills that are relevant to a wide variety of fields. There is an emphasis on numerical, communication and problem-solving skills in addition to the teamwork involved in the practical situation. While there is a need for learning of facts to provide the groundwork for the subject, the emphasis is on the understanding and application of ideas. Therefore, you will be challenged by the subject and learn to think for yourself.

Course content

Module 1- Development of practical skills in chemistry
Module 2 - Foundations in chemistry
Module 3 - Periodic table and energy
Module 4 - Core organic chemistry
Module 5 - Physical chemistry and the transition elements
Module 6 - Organic chemistry and analysis

Practical and mathematical skills
Practical skills are assessed in all the written examinations. 15% of the total A level marks will be for practical knowledge and understanding. Students complete a minimum of 12 practical activities to demonstrate practical competence

A separate endorsement of practical work will be assessed by teachers. This will not be graded. If students pass, it will be reported on their certificate.

Entry requirements

- Standard entry requirements.
- Grade B or above in GCSE chemistry module
- Grade 6 or above in GCSE maths
- Students must have good written communication skills.
