Further Mathematics AS & A Level at Brine Leas School

Course description

The Mathematics Department will be offering the above AS level courses. These courses are updated regularly to ensure that they meet the ever-changing needs of both the students and the needs of potential employers and/or University and Colleges of further education.

Further Mathematics must be taken in two option blocks and successful students gain two A-Levels.

Further Mathematics

This course requires ALL students to complete three Core modules (C1, C2 and C3) as well as Further Pure 1, Statistics 1 (S1) and Mechanics (M1) in year 12. This gives the students TWO AS Levels at the end of year 12 (Pure and Further Mathematics) as well as the necessary grounding required to undertake the 6 further modules in year 13. ALL students in year 13 study Core 4 (C4), Further Pure 2 (FP2), Decision 1 and 2 (D1 and D2), Statistics 2 (S2) and Mechanics 2 (M2). The completion of all 12 modules results in two A-Levels (Mathematics and Further Mathematics). Pupils may choose to only study 3 out of the 6 year 13 modules (one of which must be Core 4). These pupils will receive A-Level Mathematics and AS Further Mathematics.

Entry requirements

To study Further Mathematics it is essential that students have achieved at least a Grade A at GCSE.

Each module is assessed by one written examination (1 hour and 30 minutes) and carries equal weighting. All papers are calculator papers with the EXCEPTION of Core 1. All examinations are sat in the summer term.
