English Literature at Branston Community Academy

Course description

The A level specifications for AS and A Level English Literature are designed to encourage wide reading and advanced detailed research within the whole field of literary studies. They build on the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired by candidates taking English and English Literature at GCSE.

Unit One of the AS level specification introduces students to the importance of narrative in Literacy texts. The main focus is how narratives are constructed by authors and the different ways in which readers can respond to narratives.
Unit Two introduces students to aspects of dramatic genre. The genre referred to is comedy. Students will study and read a Shakespeare play that can be labelled as a comedy, as well as one other ‘comedy’.
Unit Three will involve the study of Gothic literature.
Unit Four Further and Independent Reading candidates will have access to a pre-released pack of critical material which introduces students to some different approaches to the study of English Literature.

Entry requirements

At least A*-B in both GCSE English Language and Literature, however strong Grade C candidates would be considered after consultation.
