Accounts AS/A2 Level at South Downs College

Course description

Money makes the world go round! Everyone relies on money and the successful handling and accounting of finance is what A level Accounts is all about.

Whether you aspire to be an Accountant or run your own business or you just wish to survive in the business world, this could be the subject for you.

You need to enjoy working with figures and solving problems. Accounting fits ideally alongside A level Business Studies, Mathematics, Computing or Economics.

Course content

AS level – Year 1, 2 Units

Preparing Financial Accounts – accounting records, double entry book-keeping, income statements, balance sheets and computers in accounts.

Financial & Management Accounting – further work on preparing financial statements, company accounts, ratio analysis and assessment of business performance and introduction to budgeting.

A2 level – Year 2, 2 Units

Further Financial Accounting – incomplete records, partnership accounts, published company accounts and valuation of inventory.

Further Management Accounting – manufacturing accounts, absorption and marginal costing, standard costing and variance analysis, capital investment appraisal, decision making and social accounting.


Entry requirements

A minimum of five GCSEs at grades A*-C, including English Language and Mathematics at Grade C or above.


You will generally be required to complete one piece of work per week for tutor assessment by your lecturer, though this does not form part of the final grading.

Each level will comprise of 2 units – examinations are taken in May in the first year and June of the second year.

The AS level comprises 50% of the total A level – each AS unit has a 1_ hour exam containing 4 compulsory questions.

A2 level comprises the remaining 50% of the total A level – the A2 can only be taken following success at AS level.


Future opportunities

The qualification is particularly useful to those who wish to proceed to higher education or who wish to undertake Professional qualifications in the Accounting field (particularly AAT, ACCA and CIMA courses).

Possession of an Accounting qualification may also be advantageous to those wishing to pursue more general business courses or business career opportunities.

Further information

At the end of the AS year you will have the opportunity to study and gain a Level 1 Computerised Accounting qualification, using SAGE software, at no extra cost. Those students progressing to the A2 in Accounts may take the SAGE Level 2 qualification.
