Barbering Intermediate Apprenticeship at Gateshead College

Course description

If you are creative, like working with people and have lots of ambition, then barbering could be for you.  You need to be aware of the different roles within the barber shop and have good hand and eye co-ordination, ideally combined with artistic/creative skills.

This Apprenticeship covers all the basics of barbering, as a barbering Apprentice; you will work as a junior, assisting senior staff while training as an apprentice barber.

Course content

Duties are likely to include booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling men’s hair, and cutting hair with the use of clipper over comb and scissor over comb techniques.

You’ll study barbering topics such as different hair shapes and cutting facial hair to shape using basic techniques.  Optional units include colouring, perming and creating basic patterns in the hair.

You will receive the following qualifications:

 

  • NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Barbering (QCF)
  • Functional Skills - English Level 1, Mathematics Level 1 and Information, Communications and Technology Level 1.
  • Additional Outcomes - Employment Rights & Responsibilities Personal Learning & Thinking Skills     

You will also receive an Apprenticeship Completion Certificate when you have completed all of the requirements.

Further information

Some optional units you may choose to do will involve using chemicals such as colours and perm solutions. Any predisposition to skin allergies or conditions such as occupational dermatitis, eczema and asthma may mean these options are not suitable for you to choose.

    • Gateshead College's Baltic Campus is located on the Gateshead quayside, just minutes from Newcastle City Centre and its attractions.

      The College is situated behind the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.

      The College has its own car park, but at busy times alternative parking is available nearby.

      There is a charge for parking. Students can apply for a permit to allow free parking during study time.
