Why study History?

History should be studied because the past is of interest, enjoyment and excitement in itself. History enables us to understand “how we are, who we are”, and how the world has evolved into its present state. Our planned study encompasses a range of historical topics over different time periods, designed to promote the highest student interest and to fully utilise the expertise of the department. The study of History allows us to develop key skills, including document analysis, the ability to investigate independently and critically and to write with confidence.

Post 16…?

The study of History can lead to careers focusing on the subject discipline such as archaeology, historical research and teaching, as well as proving suitable for courses and careers in law, administration, business, accountancy, journalism and the armed forces. Possessing a History qualification in itself will open any doors to many different career options, given the inherently useful skills which you will perfect during the course.

Opportunities outside the Classroom…

It is proposed that in order to bring our topics of study to life, Sixth Form historians will embark on an exciting residential excursion to Berlin, Germany. An excursion to the Imperial War Museum, Churchill War Rooms, Churchill Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, all in London will also take place.

If you are interested in the past and its relation to the present, enjoy reading, writing, discussion and debate and are motivated to learn and work hard, History should be one of your choices. A significant number of History students from OSH have been scientists and mathematicians as well as from the traditional Arts subjects.
