Engineering BTEC Level 3 Diploma at UTC Reading

Course description

The engineering sector continues to suffer from a skills gap and needs to keep up with rapidly developing technologies. The engineering BTEC Level 3 qualification has been designed to give new entrants to the engineering sector the underpinning knowledge and specific skills needed to meet the needs of modern mechanical engineering industries.

The BTEC qualifications have been developed in the engineering sector to:

  • recognised Level 3 vocationally-specific qualification

  • give full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the mechanical engineering sector or to progress to vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals in Mechanical Engineering

  • give learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life

Course content

Year 12 - subsidiary diploma – equivalent to one A-Level

  • Unit 1 - Health and safety in the engineering workplace
  • Unit 4 - Mathematics for engineering technicians
  • Unit 5 - Mechanical principles and applications
  • Construction technology and design in construction and civil engineering
  • Unit 6 - Electrical and electronic principles
  • Unit 26 - Applications of computer numerical control in engineering


Year 13 - diploma (six units) – equivalent to two A-Levels or extended diploma (12 units) – equivalent to three A-Levels 

  • Unit 2 - Communications for engineering technicians
  • Unit 3 - Engineering project
  • Unit 10 - Properties and applications of engineering materials
  • Unit 8 - Engineering design
  • Unit 16 - Engineering drawing for technicians
  • Unit 13 - Principles and applications of fluid mechanics
  • Unit 19 - Mechanical measurement and inspection techniques
  • Unit 35 - Principles and applications of electronic devices and circuits
  • Unit 51 - Electrical technology
  • Unit 58 - Construction and applications of digital systems
  • Unit 53 - Electronic measurement and testing
  • Unit 62 - Principles and operation of three-phase systems
