Sport - First Certificate at Truro and Penwith College

Course description

The course will engage you to take responsibility for your own learning and to develop skills that are essential for the workplace.  The course will involve two online externally assessed units, Fitness Testing and Training, and Anatomy and Physiology. In addition to this you will complete six internally assessed units including Planning and Leading Sports Activities and Injury and the Sports Performer. Each assignment will be based around a scenario which reflects tasks and projects that sports employees would be undertaking in the workplace. For example, a health fitness instructor conducting client health and fitness assessments.

You will learn in a range of methods including practical experiences and theory based lessons.  You will be taught in classroom lectures, practical sport and group discussions using the extensive facilities at the College, including a purpose built sports hall, fitness suite, 3G astro and massage suites. Alongside the Progression 2 Sport pathway you will study Maths and English for 4 hours each a week. Progression onto a Level 3 course will only be secured once you have completed the BTEC Certificate in Sport and achieved a C grade in either GCSE Maths or English.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grade D, including English and Maths at grade E.

Assessment

Continued assessment through assignments either written or practical, two modules are externally assessed.

Future opportunities

Completing this qualification will enable progression to further study, training, or employment and which will enable you to make informed choices with regard to a career in the Sport sector. You will also have developed academic and practical skills that may be applicable in other work situations or will enable you to progress to Level 3 qualifications in areas such as Public Services, Sport or Outdoor Adventure.

All Progression 2 pathways will include English and Maths up to Level 2. You will study either GCSE or Functional skills to ensure that they achieve at Level 2 before progressing onto Level 3 courses.
