Alevel Music at King Edward VI Aston School
The department is situated in a purpose-built Music Suite with a Recital Hall, a large classroom, a dedicated 6th form music teaching room, 3 instrumental teaching rooms, 4 further practice rooms, a recording studio and instrumental storeroom. ‘A’ Level students are offered the use of these rooms when available during their personal study time.
The music department is very lively and provides many extra-curricular activities. These include two Big Bands, String Orchestra, Concert Band, a 6th form Jazz Ensemble, choir and around 10 small instrumental ensembles for specialist chamber music coaching. There are further opportunities for students to form their own chamber ensembles, small jazz groups and rock bands.
A key part of the extra-curricular programme for A2 music is the opportunity to direct and rehearse some of the junior ensembles. This forms part of the leadership programme which also includes leading music projects at nearby primary schools.
A Level Music
Students will follow the Edexcel AS and A2 Level courses. Both courses are divided into 3 units.
Performing: Students give a 5-6 minute instrumental or vocal recital on an instrument of their choice. The recital is given on a date chosen by the individual candidate and the school within a set period. This is internally assessed and is 30% of the total marks for AS Music.
Composing: Students compose a 3 minute piece from one of four composition briefs provided at the start of the course by the exam board. In addition candidates write a ‘CD sleeve note’ to accompany their composition. Both elements are completed under controlled conditions and are assessed by the exam board. This is 30% of the total marks for AS Music.
Developing Musical Understanding: i) Candidates study extracts from a group of prescribed vocal and instrumental works. ii) Candidates study 4 part tonal harmony to complete a short harmony exercise. Both elements above are assessed in a 2 hour exam paper marked by the exam board and are 40% of the total marks for AS Music.
