Carpentry and Joinery Cskills Level 1 Diploma at Bedford College
This Level 1 course will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to carry out a range of introductory carpentry and joinery techniques to the standards agreed by the leading industry bodies. The course will widen your understanding of the industry, providing you with an excellent starting point to progress onto further study, or into a career in the wood trade.
During this course you will study a range of topics, including:
- Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction and Associated Industries
- Knowledge of Technical Information, Quantities and Communicating with Others
- Knowledge of Construction Technology
- Produce Woodworking Joints
- Maintain and Use Carpentry and Joinery Hand Tools
- Prepare and Use Carpentry and Joinery Portable Power Tools.
You will also study essential core skills to help you prepare for employment and higher level study.
In order to begin this course you will need to have a keen interest in carpentry. Some evidence of studying at GCSE level or successful completion of an entry level qualification would be an advantage. Entry is also subject to a successful interview, where you will be asked to complete a skills assessment. You will need to achieve a certain level on this assessment; otherwise you will need to top-up your skills.
You will be continuously assessed as the course progresses, with your skills and knowledge being measured against set standards as the units of training are completed. There will also be a practical exam and a series of unit tests.
This course could be free! You will be eligible if you are aged 19-24 on the 31st August of the year you are starting your course and are actively seeking employment and in receipt of a means tested benefit (such as job seekers, housing benefit, council tax benefit). Please note you will need to be able to produce evidence of the benefit in your name when you come to enrol.
Upon successful completion of this course you could progress onto Site Carpentry Level 2, or Bench Joinery Level 2.
Students who are motivated and committed can advance at a faster rate. Completion time for adults will depend on the outcome of prior assessment of your current skills and experience, together with your attendance. After this is completed, individual training plans can be devised. If you are aged 16-18, tuition fees, exam fees and College membership are free. However, to take part in this course, you will be required to pay £20 for uniform/equipment and £20 for a course textbook to aid your studies. You will also need to pay £10 to attend educational event(s) that complement your course.
