Automotive - Level 1 Award or Diploma in Motorcycle Studies at Wakefield College

Course description

If you are interested in a career in the motorcycle industry, perhaps as a specialist in that field, this course will give you an introduction to both its practical and theoretical aspects. You will work in our well-equipped, modern workshop, practising your skills on our stock of motorcycles of different types - scooters, off-road bikes, touring bikes and sports bikes.

Course content

What you will study

All aspects of motorcycle technology, with industry standards applied throughout.  Subjects are broken down into easy-to-manage areas of study such as Health & Safety, correct use of tools and equipment, basic servicing, and preparation for riding and use.

You will also study for appropriate Functional Skills in English, Maths and IT.

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.

Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C.  This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

Classroom: 50%; Practical: 50%

You will attend practical sessions in the College's purpose-built motor vehicle workshops and classroom based theory lessons.

Assessment

Continuous assessment of practical workshop tasks and compilation of a portfolio of evidence of tasks completed, plus oral and written tests.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

Future opportunities

Further study

On completion of the ABC Level 1 course you could progress to a variety of vocationally relevant qualifications at Wakefield College such as the Level 2 Diploma in Motorcycle Service and Repair.

      The Castleford Campus (previously known as the skillsXchange) houses the College’s provision in Construction, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, IT and some Care and replaces the training which was previously offered at the College’s Whitwood Campus.

      Located at Junction 32 of the M62 between Castleford and Pontefract, the site is well known for Xscape, the indoor ski slope whose building houses a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall, sports facilities and restaurants. The Campus is situated directly next to the Asda in Glasshoughton.


      A learning resource centre, equipped with the very latest in technology, is a superb place for individual study, or to relax and use the internet. The Centre overlooks the large external courtyard, where students can mix, mingle and chill.

      In state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons, including a nail bar, we are training the next generation of hairdressers and beauticians. These professional salons offer live training environments to our students, with treatments for both men and women available at affordable prices. There are also industry standard facilities for the study of construction and engineering, motor vehicle and electrical courses.
