Latin A-Level at Kendrick Academy

Course description

This course focuses on studying the language and literature of ancient Rome. Two prose and two verse texts are studied in depth, and a range of additional literary texts are studied in English translation to give a broad experience and understanding of Latin literature. While focusing on language and literature, the course also introduces students to aspects of the history and culture of the ancient world.

Course content

At AS two units are studied:

  •  Latin Language (unprepared prose translation);
  •  Latin Literature (prescribed texts covering prose and verse).

A further two units are studied at A2:

  •  Latin verse (prescribed verse text and a passage of unprepared verse);
  •  Latin Prose (prescribed prose text and a passage of unprepared prose).

Assessment

Language:

Unseen translation (01)

  • 1h 45 minute paper (100 marks, 33%)

Prose composition or comprehension (02)

  • 1hr 15 minute exam (50 marks 17%)

Literature:

Prose literature (03)

  • 2hr exam (75 marks, 50%)

Verse literature (04)

  • 2hr exam (75 marks, 50%)

Future opportunities

A Classics degree has a high rate of employment success and is popular with employers because of its emphasis on thinking and communication skills. The career opportunities are very wide, but could include the legal profession, journalism, business and management.
