Chemistry A2 Level at North Lindsey College

Course description

There are two qualifications available – an AS level in one year or an A level in two years. These are separate courses and transfer from one to the other is NOT possible at the end of year 1. Don’t worry – this will be discussed in full with you at your personal interview which will be arranged with you on receipt of your application. The course builds on the chemical concepts and knowledge which were introduced at GCSE. Topics like atomic structure, rates of reaction, organic chemistry, covalent and ionic bonding, reversible reactions and many more are developed up to A Level standard.

Course content

Physical Chemistry:
Atomic structure, Amount of substance, Bonding, Energetics, Equilibria, Kinetics

Inorganic Chemistry:
Periodicity, Group 7 (Halogens),Group 2 (Alkaline Earth Metals)

Organic Chemistry
Introduction to organic chemistry, Alkanes, Haloalkanes, Alkenes, Alcohols, Organic analysis

Entry requirements

You will need 5 or more GCSEs at A* - C plus a grade B in double or triple science and a grade B in GCSE Maths to start this course.


Assessment is by written papers and practical assessments.

Future opportunities

You can progress to higher education or employment in a wide range of occupations including advanced apprenticeships.
All Advanced Qualifications, AS, A2 and Applied AS/A Levels earn UCAS points, which contribute to university entry requirements and are valid for the rest of your life.
