Spanish IB at Impington Village College

Course description

The IB recognises the major role of languages in the world by insisting that students take at least one foreign language (known as Language B) at either higher or standard level. It is essential that all students should have at their command more than one language and that they should learn to think internationally. The apprenticeship of learning a foreign language is both a training for later language acquisition and a testing ground for tolerance, in that it will by its very nature teach new ways of thinking and of looking at the world.

The aims of the Language B programme at both higher and standard levels are t develop your powers of expression in a second language; provide you with an efficient tool for the study of other subjects; bring you into contact with ways of thought which differ from your own.

Course content

Language B - Higher and Standard Levels

This is a course intended for students who are seeking breadth and an international outlook.

In a foreign language at IB you will be exploring many themes relating to aspects of contemporary society such as the changing nature of the family, the impact of leisure, the role of the media and social issues such as immigration, racism, youth culture.

You would be extending your language skills from listening to and speaking the language, reading journalistic, literary and informative texts either printed or web- based and writing a mixture of exercises and essays.

You will be assessed in a number of different ways: listening, written text handling, essay writing and oral. The oral component is assessed internally by your teacher in the final year of the course.

Visiting a foreign country is an integral part of your foreign language course. We normally expect our Year 12 students to take part in an exchange in the country of the language studied. There is no doubt that a stay in a foreign household is of the utmost importance linguistically; it considerably enhances fluency in a language and improves overall comprehension, as well as giving unique insight into everyday life in that country.

We currently have exchanges with:  Instituto Santiago Hernndez, Zaragoza, Spain.

We have had considerable success with admission to universities. At Impington you will get dedicated teaching from committed, lively and experienced teachers and further opportunity to practise with native Laguage Assistants. We pride ourselves on getting to know our students well and giving them individual attention.

    • Impington International College is unusual, to say the least, and is possibly unique amongst state education providers. The chance for young people from all over the world to work and socialise together gives tremendous opportunities for broadening cultural horizons, increasing understanding and challenging preconceptions. Impington International College offers a wide range of courses and programmes: BTECs and, since 1991, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), followed recently by the International Baccalaureate Careers Programme (IBCP). At the heart of all of our provision is the IB mission statement, which aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. We actively encourage our students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. We have a good balance between overseas and UK students who come here to take the IBDP & IBCP and those who follow the BTEC route and others who are attracted by Impington’ s superb reputation in the area of Performance. We want outstanding achievement for all our students no matter what path they choose to follow. Our tutorial system and small class sizes ensure lots of individual attention but we encourage students to be independent and think for themselves. Our alumni are welcomed everywhere from Cambridge or St Andrew’s Universities, to The Place and Italia Conti; from Maastricht or Japan to UCAL. If you are prepared to challenge yourself to the full and if the opportunity to learn in an international environment motivates you, Impington International College will be the right place to prepare you for the next stage of your life.
