Fashion and Costume Level 2 at Northampton College

Course description

This course is a really good grounding for students who are interested in a career within the fashion industry. During the course students will gain an understanding of the career opportunities available in the creative industries and prepare a portfolio of work suitable for application to Level 3 courses or for creative apprenticeship opportunities. Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to explore the work of artists and designers to influence and inspire the work you produce and during the year you will go on at least three gallery visits to gather information relevant to your project work. You will get to carry out projects in fashion design including garment construction, textiles, costume design working with our students in performing arts and accessory design. Two of the units in the course are externally set with a final work for these units being produced under exam conditions, however both of these units are very practical.

Course content

This course is for those students who are enthusiastic about following a career in fashion, textiles or costume design. If students successfully achieve a Merit grade for this course and a C or above for GCSE English they can progress to Level 3 Fashion and Clothing or another Level 3 course either within art and design or in another area.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at Grade D or above including English and Art or a relevant Level 1 qualification in Art and Design plus GCSE English at Grade D or the equivalent Functional Skills qualification.You will also need a portfolio of art/textile work demonstrating your ability in Art, Design and Textiles.

Assessment

In each unit you will be given assignments designed to achieve clear learning outcomes which will be graded at Pass, Merit and Distinction level. The course is a mixture of eight internally set and assessed units and two externally set and assessed units, the grades of all these units go forward to form your final qualification grade. All units, including those set by the exam board have an emphasis on practical work, but written work will also be included.

Future opportunities

After successful completion of this programme you may consider progression onto a Level 3 Study Programme.

Further information

All Art and Design students must purchase a starter kit of essential media and equipment in year one. Each year students will pay a fee toward materials (approx £35/year)they will also pay approx. £100 a year cover trips, including graduate fashion week. Students aged 19-23 at the start of the course will be required to pay a BTEC registration fee of approximately £180.All fees are payable at enrolment.
