Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy NVQ Level 1 at Bedford College

Course description

This wide-ranging practical course will equip you with all the professional skills, competencies and knowledge you will need to become an assistant hairdresser. During the programme you will develop a range of skills, including shampooing, conditioning and drying of hair, assisting in perming and colouring, and salon reception duties.

Course content

During the course you will study a wide range of topics, including:

  • Health and safety within the salon
  • Assisting with salon duties
  • Teamwork
  • Shampooing and conditioning hair
  • Assisting with perming and colouring services
  • Preparation for hairdressing services.

Entry requirements

To begin this course you will need a genuine interest in hairdressing and beauty therapy and a strong desire to follow a career in the industry. Some evidence of studying at GCSE level or successful completion of an entry level qualification would be an advantage.

Assessment

Assessment will be continuous, and you will need to build up a portfolio of practical and theoretical work. Practical assessments will take place in the College’s salons, while theoretical knowledge is assessed through project assignments, written papers and coursework.

Financial information

This course could be free! You will be eligible if you are aged 19-24 on the 31st August of the year you are starting your course and are actively seeking employment and in receipt of a means tested benefit (such as job seekers, housing benefit, council tax benefit). Please note you will need to be able to produce evidence of the benefit in your name when you come to enrol.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you can progress onto Hairdressing Level 2, or into employment as an apprentice in a hairdressing salon.

Further information

Within the department we regard good appearance, conduct and attitude as an essential and ongoing part of the course, and you will be required to wear the designated uniform and adhere to professional codes of appearance and conduct at all times. You will be required to pay £52.99 for uniform and £167.15 for personal equipment. During the course you may be required to work on your fellow students during practical sessions. Throughout the year you will also have the opportunity to take part in field trips to exhibitions and competitions. The cost of these trips is £37.50.
