Introduction to Hair and Beauty Sector Level 1 Diploma at Darlington College

Course description

This course will provide you with a range of creative hairdressing skills as well as building your own personal development in readiness for progressing onto a higher level of study or into an Apprenticeship.

If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme.  You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.

To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation

Course content

This course enables you to develop the necessary interpersonal skills as well as the appropriate ‘on the job’ skills. You will be taught using up to date resources that are appropriate to your individual learning style. Lessons are in the form of practical workshops/seminars/master classes as well as theory lessons, e-learning activities and tutorials. You will need to dedicate four hours per week to private study time

  • Working with others in the Hair and Beauty Sector
  • Shampoo and conditioning
  • Styling men’s hair
  • Styling women’s hair
  • Create a hair and beauty image
  • The art of dressing hair
  • Creative hair colouring
  • Hair plaiting and twisting

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications but a keen interest in the subject is essential and a satisfactory school report.
We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

Future opportunities

You can progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing or Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy, depending on the route you want your career to take.
