AS/A MATHEMATICS (FURTHER) at Peter Symonds College

Course description

AS Maths AND Further Maths - This is TWO subject choices. AS Further Maths cannot be studied without AS Maths. You will need at least an A grade in Maths GCSE to study AS Further Maths. In this additional course you will study three further modules - Further Pure 1, Mechanics 1 and Decision Maths 1.

Success in Further Mathematics is extremely desirable and expected for many popular mathematics related degree courses. It provides applicants to university with a distinct advantage as many university departments look favourably on success in Further Mathematics.

Entry requirements

There are 3 different maths courses available; Use of Maths, Maths and Further Maths.

5 GCSE’s at Grades A*- C including English and Maths plus,

AS Use of Maths: you will be required to have achieved a grade B or higher in Maths GCSE.
AS Maths: You will be required to have achieved an A or A* in Maths GCSE.
AS Further Maths: you will be required to have achieved a grade A or A* in Maths GCSE.

It is also vital to your success that you enjoy using algebraic skills (such as solving equations, factorising quadratics, and working with surds and indices) to solve problems. You will be given an extensive task to complete after Taster Day in order to practise these skills before you begin your course.
