Mathematics AS/A2 Level at Birchwood Community High School
Mathematics can be studied as a subject in its own right, or to support other subjects at Level 3. It provides a pathway into a variety of higher education and degree courses. If you are looking for employment after sixth form, having A Level Mathematics will greatly enhance your curriculum vitae and hence your job prospects.
The Edexcel AS Level and A2 Level Mathematics course has been designed to provide routes of progression between GCSE and Higher Education and/or employment. It has the flexibility to meet the diverse needs of the wide variety of learners needing mathematics at this level.
The course is designed to help students to fulfil their potential by taking and enjoying mathematics which is relevant to their needs post 16. This involves four key elements: breadth, depth, being up to date and providing students with the ability to use mathematics in a variety of ways.
The core modules build on ideas developed at GCSE and lay down the foundations for calculus, co-ordinate geometry, trigonometry and algebra.
The statistics module covers some of the fundamental aspects of statistics: exploring and representing data data, modelling and probability.
The A2 course further develops the skills learned at AS Level and begins to introduce students to skills that they will need in higher education.

In Year 2 you are also introduced to Decision Mathematics.
To study Mathematics at this level you need a grade B at GCSE Level. If you are in second set for GCSE you will be asked to complete a transition module over the summer holiday to ensure that all aspects of algebra are fully understood.
All examinations now take place in the summer term.
