Creative Digital Media Production BTEC National Extended Certificate at Esher College
The BTEC Extended Certificate in Media is a nationally recognised general vocational qualification designed to provide creative students with a thorough understanding of the media sector and industry practice. This is achieved through the continual assessment of practical work and working to set briefs, set by both your teachers and the examination board as well as an on-line assessment which is set and marked by the examination board. Learners on the Extended Certificate complete four units over two years and the qualification is the equivalent of one A Level.
You will gain academic, creative and practical skills. You will be taught how to critically analyse the media and learn about the practices and functions of the media industries. You will be taught practical skills for pre-production, digital photography, digital filmmaking, and web design work. You will learn how to research information effectively through the development of your independent learning skills, and to communicate your ideas in an effective, professional manner.
Students enrolling on the Extended Certificate will complete 3 mandatory units:
- Media Representation
- Pre-Production Portfolio
- Responding to a Commission
You will also study 1 Optional Unit - Film Production (Fiction)
As this is a vocational course, you will need a mix of creative thinking and organisation, while the ability to work independently to professional expectations, self-motivate and meet deadlines is also essential.
The minimum entry requirement for study at Esher College is 5 GCSEs at A* - C (or 9 – 4 in Maths and English). We encourage students to aim significantly higher than this to ensure that study programmes are successfully completed.
Aside from the general entry requirements that the College requires, you need to achieve at least a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English Language. If you have taken Media Studies GCSE at school, you need to achieve at least a Grade C to study the Extended Certificate. You will also benefit from having a good level of creativity as there is a strong creative component.
If you do not have a grade 4 in either GCSE English Language or Maths and you qualify to follow a study programme at the College, you will be required to retake one or both of these subjects in your first year.
You will be assessed on a mixture of internally and externally graded assignments.
Progression to further qualifications, such as degrees in media production-related subjects, is a likely route. Alternatively, this qualification enables candidates to enter employment at a trainee level.
Please note that this subject is in the process of being reformed. The current information reflects what is known about the new course and further details will be available on the website when the specification (syllabus) has been finalised and published.
