Physical Education A Level at Stanground Academy

Course description

The course will appeal to you if you have a keen interest in sport and recreation and want to follow a course that develops the theoretical aspects through practical involvement.

Course content

You will develop your knowledge of physiological factors affecting performance including:

-skeletal and muscular systems, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, exercise, rest and recovery.

-energy systems

-diet and nutrition

-training methods

-sports injuries


You will develop your knowledge of psychological factors affecting performance including:

skill acquisition

-sports psychology

You will develop your knowledge of socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport including:

-historical aspects

-how sport affects society


-global events eg. Olympic games

-ethics and deviance


-technology in sport


You will develop your performance in physical education by improving:

-analysis and evaluation

-performance in a role: leader or performer


Entry requirements

5 + A* to B grades at GCSE including grade 5 or above in English and mathematics. Grade B or above in PE and grade C or above in science


Through coursework and examination at the end of year 2

Future opportunities

  • Higher education – physical education, sports sciences, physiotherapy, recreation and leisure studies and teaching
  • Career opportunities - recreational management, leisure activities, the armed forces and the civil service
