Coaching and Progression in Sport Level 3 at Gateshead College

Course description

This course offers a range of units which will provide you with transferable skills and knowledge from all aspects of sport.
This course is ideal if you would like to go straight into employment as this course has a great balance of theoretical study along with practical skills. 

Course content

You will study anatomy and physiology, sports nutrition, current issues in sport, exercise for specific groups and fitness training and programming.


The course will provide learning experience individually tailored for you, to prepare you for entry into higher education or directly into a sports-related job.

We'll focus on developing not just your academic ability, but your vocational and employability skills.

You will also complete a work experience unit with one of our sport industry partners with the possibility of gaining an NGB recognised qualification.

Maths and English

As well as doing the Level 3 Diploma in Sport you will also have lessons developing your functional skills, maths and English as they are an essential requirement when working in the sports industry.

Employability Skills will also be taught as part of the curriculum so we can prepare you and give you the skills that will make you stand out in the jobs market. Individual tutorials will provide you the opportunity to communicate directly with your teaching team to track your progress and ask questions about your course.

Sport and Leadership Academies

As a full-time student, while studying this course you will be required to become a member of one of our Sport Academies orthe Leadership Academy, where you will receive the following for your chosen sport:

  • Up to nine hours of professional training every week.

  • The opportunity to compete in local, national and international competitions.

  • A personalised training and development programme and nutritional advice.

  • Our professional academy coaches together with our strength and conditioning and physiotherapy teams will support you all the way.

If you prefer not to be part of the Sports Academies you will join our new and exciting Leadership Academy where you will complete various volunteering experiences as part of your study programme.

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSE's A* - C grade including either Maths or English


You will be assessed by your tutor through methods including assignment work, practical sessions and course work.

A real plus will be that you do not need to sit any exams.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of these qualifications will give you the necessary skills to seek work within the leisure industry or to progress onto another course, then onto university. On completion of the course , you will be offered a variety of academic and vocational routes which include progressing to complete a second year of a Diploma in Sport or a vocational route which will provide further qualifications for you to work as a coach, gym instructor, sports leader or another entry-level role within sport.

    • Gateshead College's Baltic Campus is located on the Gateshead quayside, just minutes from Newcastle City Centre and its attractions.

      The College is situated behind the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.

      The College has its own car park, but at busy times alternative parking is available nearby.

      There is a charge for parking. Students can apply for a permit to allow free parking during study time.
