Use of Mathematics A Level at Collingwood College

Course description

The qualification in Use of Mathematics has been developed to encourage more students to study Mathematics beyond 16.

The qualification is suitable for all students who meet the entry requirements and will help you to:

  • apply Mathematics to your other studies, work or interests;
  • develop Mathematical modelling, communication and reasoning skills and the ability to solve substantial, realistic and open-ended problems;
  • use ICT appropriately within Mathematics.

It will prove particularly useful to those working in the areas of:

  • Technology, including Engineering
  • Science
  • Economics
  • Business Studies

Course content

To gain AS Use of Mathematics you need to complete the compulsory Algebra unit with two other Free Standing Maths (FSM) units from the following list:

  • Data analysis
  • Decision
  • Hypothesis testing
  • Dynamics
  • Personal Finance

Each unit is individually graded and certificated. This qualification will appeal to all post-16 students who are not ready to embark on an AS Mathematics course in Year 12, or those who want to continue with Mathematics to support their other subjects.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C (or equivalent), including Grade C in Mathematics. Grade B in GCSE Mathematics is recommended.


All units are one hour written examinations. All units are equally weighted.

Future opportunities

Students who complete AS Use of Mathematics will gain UCAS points equivalent to a standard AS qualification and will be able to continue on to the A level course. It is particularly useful to support progression into the fields of IT, Science, Technology, Economics and Business.
