Applied Science Level 2 at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai

Course description

Would you like to develop your scientific skills through practical activities? Could you benefit from a broad and varied programme in applied science?

This programme of study will lead to a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science. You will also have the opportunity to gain other qualifications. This may include GCSE Maths and English, depending on what qualifications you already have.

This programme gives a fundamental understanding of science, focusing on its practical application as well as the relevant theory. You will study core scientific units, along with specialist units in biology, chemistry and physics.

The programme is suitable for students progressing from GSCEs. It is also ideal if you are coming from a Level 1 or Level 2 programme at the college, or from relevant work experience.  The qualification is equivalent to four GCSE pass grades, and will give you a range of important skills.

Course content

The programme will be delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Lectures
  • Practical sessions
  • Practical investigations
  • Videos
  • Role play
  • Outside visits
  • Case studies
  • Personal tutorials
  • Private study

You will study a variety of subject-specific modules, in addition to Literacy and Numeracy skills.

Entry requirements

  • You need to be interested in science or science related subjects
  • You need three GCSEs at grades D-G
  • Relevant work experience and other Level 1 or Level 2 qualifications may also give you entry.

All places are subject to satisfactory interview.

Assessment

The programme is assessed through a blend of the following:

  • Written assignments
  • Examination
  • Practical investigations and reports
  • Two external examinations

Future opportunities

Completion of this programme provides you with a range of options. Many students choose to progress onto Applied Science (Bio Sciences) Level 3 available at Rhos-on-Sea or Applied Science (Forensic Science) Level 3, available at Bangor.

Alternatively, you could take another Level 3 programme, or enter scientific work, including roles in medical or industrial laboratories.
