Welding and Engineering Level 2 at Mid Cheshire College

Course description

The qualification prepares learners for employment in either Welding fabrication or Engineering Sectors.
The learners who are seeking employment in engineering gain the foundation building blocks for an apprenticeship together with a technical certificate in Welding and Fabrication.

Course content

A Full Technical industry based certificate in Welding and Fabrication backed by The Welding Institute, the certificate comprises 4 units made up of 3 practical assessment units and online examinations.
Fabrication and welding units:
• Mags Welding
• Tig Welding
• Fabrication
• Related studies
You will experience a wide range of engineering skills such,
The Performing Engineering Operations Level 2 consists of workshop tasks and the completion of a portfolio, the 6 units required comprise of the following topics:

• Health and Safety
• Working with others
• Communication
• Lathe Turning
• Bench Fitting
• Milling Operations.

Practical units will include:
• Bench fitting
o Drilling
o Tapping
o Filing and cutting
• Lathe Turning
o Three and four jaw work
o Round and square bar
o Tapering,
o Knurling
o Boring
o Surface finishes
• Milling
o Slotting
o Creating V sections
o Face cutting
o Slab cutting

Entry requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade D or above or an equivalent qualification.


A range of assessment methods will be used including reports, work related projects on line tests and paper based tests. Assessment will be continual throughout the course.

Future opportunities

A key progression for the Welding and Fabrication would be Level 3 for P E O progression would be Level 3 Engineering or HNC. Learners may also seek employment as a Welder Fabricator or Engineer /Technician in a variety of engineering industries.
