A Level English Literature at Kingston College

Course description

You will develop your enjoyment and interest in literature and broaden your knowledge and understanding of poetry, plays and novels, from the seventeenth century to the present day. English Literature A Level is a core subject and you will be able to combine it effectively with any other mix of subjects. You will develop important skills such as critical analysis and writing skills which are highly valued by universities and, of course, by your future employer. English is a subject for students who take real pleasure in reading. If you enjoy reading, this will probably be your favourite subject.

Course content

A Level English Literature is a linear qualification with students taking the final exam after two years of study. Students will study one Shakespeare play from either the tragedies or comedies; two prose texts from a chosen theme, one of the texts must be pre- 1900; and a selection of poetry from a range of time periods.

Entry requirements

A Level entry criteria are a minimum of five GCSEs, at grades 9-5, all in academic subjects. These must include a minimum of a grade 5 in GCSE English and a grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics. This qualification can only be studied alongside two other A Level subjects.

Students will need to complete coursework assessment.

    • The site at Kingston Hall Road is the College's main site and houses the Student Registry and Welfare departments as well as Deli KC and the ACT Theatre.  The Arena Sports facility and Arena Hair and Beauty are both attached to this building, which also houses the central administration facility for the College.
