History A Level at St Edward's Roman Catholic/Church of England School

Course description

We aim to provide students with a broad and exciting range of topics which cover British and World History from the Early Modern to the Modern period.  These are of course topics that entertain and interest us the most and therefore we love to teach them. 

Course content

Unit 1 - Year 1: British History Study - assessed in an examination and is worth 25% of the final A Level. Current topic: 'The Stuarts and the English Civil Wars, 1603-1660'. (OCR Unit Y108)

Unit 2 - Year 1: Non-British History Study: assets in an examination and is worth 15% of the final A Level. Current topic: 'The Cold War in Europe, 1941-1995'. (OCR Unit Y223)

Unit 3 - Year 2: Thematic Study: assessed in an examination and is worth 40% of the final A Level. Current topic: 'Rebellion and Disorder in Tudor England, 1485-1603'. (OCR Unit Y320)

Unit 4 - Year 2: Whatever you want! Literally! Well, nearly, a 3-4000 word essay as a piece of coursework and is worth 20% of the final A Level grade.

Grade C in GCSE English and/or History

Future opportunities

History often leads to professions which require a great grasp of thinking and writing and arguing skills.  As well as those wishing to study History at a higher level, it is a favourite course for those wishing to pursue careers in Journalism, Law, Marketing, Politics and Business but the nature of the course ensures that it stands any student in good stead for the future since, as George Orwell put it, "He who controls the past, controls the future."
