Spanish A/S at University Academy Keighley

Course description

This is a topic based programme of study covering contemporary issues such as: AS: Food, diet, health, relationships, family, the generation, youth concerns, social issues, leisure and the arts, business and industry, IT.

Course content

To develop fluency and accuracy in Spoken and written Spanish and to develop fluency in understanding in reading and Listening skills.

Topics studied at AS level: Media (television, advertising and communication technology); Popular Culture (fashion trends, cinema and music); Healthy Living (exercise, health and well -being, holidays); Personal relationships (relationships within the family, friendships, marriage and partnerships.)

Topics studied at A2: The environment (Pollution, energy, protecting the planet.); The multicultural society (immigration, integration, racism); Contemporary social issues (Wealth and poverty, law and order, Impact of scientific and technological progress).

You will study to cultural topics in detail: (1) The civil War and the dictatorship of General Franco; (2) The Life and works of the film director Pedro Almodovar.

Entry requirements

For a successful transition from GCSE to AS/A2, a grade B or above in GCSE Spanish is desirable.

Future opportunities

Further education - Study for a singles honour degree in Spanish or combine it with another language or subject to achieve a joint honours degree. Career opportunities: Interpreter, Language engineer, Linguist, Terminologist, Translator, Audiologist, Bilingual Education, Cultural Affairs Officer, Immigration Officer, Import/Export Specialist, Teaching, Overseas business & management.
