Bricklaying Diploma Level 1 at Warrington & Vale Royal College
This course is ideal if you would like to follow a career path in Brickwork. The Colin Daniels Construction Centre is a dedicated facility for construction crafts, including Brickwork, with workshops that are well-equipped carrying a wide range of Brickwork tools and appropriate materials. Well-appointed classrooms and computer facilities enhance the learning environment and provide an effective link between the theoretical and practical aspects of the course.
The Diploma is awarded by "CITB Construction Skills". You will be expected to show competence, which involves the application of knowledge and skills in a significant range of varied work activities, performed in a variety of contexts. The activities at Level 1 provide a good starting point, enabling you to learn a variety of new knowledge and skills.
This course includes the following topics:
- Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
- Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
- Knowledge of construction technology
- Setting out for basic masonry structures
- Mix construction materials
- Constructing block walling
- Constructing brick walling
- Constructing cavity walling
There are no entry requirements for this qualification – anyone over the age of 18 wishing to develop hand-skills in order to progress into further learning and training in construction can take this qualification.
Your progress will be continually assessed and you will be given detailed feedback to ensure that you are able to develop your skills effectively. Assessment includes practical activities, job related multiple choice assessments at the end of each unit and external online tests.
You will need to purchase appropriate footwear to wear during practical sessions.
You will also be expected to be equipped with:
- Pens & Pencils
- Lined paper & file
- Basic calculator (not mobile phone)
- Set squares.
On successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma, you may progress to a Level 2 Diploma or, subject to gaining appropriate employment, onto an Apprenticeship to study a NVQ Level 2.
Will I complete work placements?
The college is committed to ensuring that all students benefit from the opportunity to undertake work placement whilst at college and we will support you in obtaining a placement in a relevant vocational setting.
It is our intention to try to place students with local employers. The placements would usually last 1 week and compliment your college programme. Warrington & Vale Royal College has developed strong links with national and local employers. Some work placements that students have undertaken have led to employment / apprenticeship opportunities.
Are trips and residentials organised during the course?
Educational visits are a useful part of any programme. We look favourably on a variety of visits, all of which enhance the learning process.
Are there any links with industry?
The college is continually developing and reinforcing links with the industry to promote work placement opportunities. A variety of guest speakers from are invited to speak to students during the course of the year.
Industry links are also through the work placement programme, and the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board).
