Animal Care - Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management at Wakefield College

Course description

If you’re serious about a career working with animals, this is the course for you. You will carry out practical studies both at our City Campus and Whirlow Farm Trust as well as visiting other animal establishments

Course content

This is a wide-ranging course with mandatory elements including Principles of Health and Safety, Undertake and Review Work Related Experience in the Land-based Industries, Animal Health and Husbandry, Animal Feeding and Nutrition, Animal Behaviour and Communication, Biological Systems of Animals and Animal Welfare and Breeding. There is a choice of two different pathways enabling access to specialist units. The Pathways are: General Animal Management or Zoos. Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade 9-4 (A*-C) in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you. Skills in maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at 9-4 (previously A* - C) including English or Maths AND Grade 3 in the other 
OR
5 GCSEs at 9-4 (previously A* - C) AND Level 2 Functional Skills in either English or Maths, and Grade 3 or Level 1 Functional Skills in the other
Or
Level 2 Diploma Animal Care at Merit grade and Level 2 in English and Maths.

Assessment

There are exam elements for Health and Safety and Biological Systems as well as theoretical elements of the mandatory units and the skills and knowledge gained from studying the mandatory units will also be assessed via a graded synoptic test.

Other elements will be assessed by a variety of graded assignments.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

Future opportunities

Further study

Progress to an Animal Management Foundation Degree or BSc (Hons) in Animal Management. Related degrees courses include Zoology, Marine Biology, Animal Welfare and Behaviour are also alternative progression routes.

Career opportunities

Supervisory or management positions in a wide range of environments including boarding kennels, zoos, wildlife rescue centres, the veterinary industry, conservation projects and environment management
