Course description

GCSE Biology provides a Key Stage 4 science course for learners of

any ability, whether they intend to study science further or not. The specification

has three biology teaching and learning units and a controlled assessment unit.

This course provides a firm foundation for progression to AS and A-level Biology.

  • Unit 1: Biology 1

    Written paper - 1 hour

    60 marks - 25%

    Structured and closed questions

    At least one question assessing Quality of Written Communication in a science contex

    Unit 2: Biology 2

    Written paper - 1 hour

    60 marks - 25%

    Structured and closed questions

    At least one question assessing Quality of Written Communication in a science context

    Unit 3: Biology 3

    Written paper - 1 hour

    60 marks - 25%

Future opportunities

This qualification is a recognised part of the National Qualifications Framework. As such, GCSE is a level 2 qualification and provides progression from key stage 3 to post-16 studies.

A course based on this specification provides a worthwhile course for candidates of various ages and from diverse backgrounds in terms of general education and lifelong learning. It will follow naturally from a
course based on the programme of study for KS3 Science. From a GCSE Biology course, students could progress to GCE Biology.
Alternatively, students could progress to any AS Science course.
It is aslo considered desirable for prospective entrants to the medical professions to take this course.
