Psychology at The Pingle School

Course description

At AS level you will learn about the human mind and behaviour by studying theories and studies investigating memory, the development and effects of relationships from baby to adulthood, the stress response and how to combat it, abnormality, group behaviour and psychological investigations.

At A2 level you will cover two units. In the first unit you will study three modules - these can be chosen from:

 biological rhythms and sleep

 perception

 relationships

 aggression

 eating behaviour

 gender

 intelligence and learning

 cognition and development

In the second unit you will investigate a psychopathological disorder such as schizophrenia or depression or an anxiety disorder. You will also look at psychology in action whereby you will be able to critically apply psychology from one of the following areas:

 media psychology

 addiction

 paranormal psychology

The final part of this unit is brought together looking at research and scientific methods used in psychological investigations.

How will I be assessed?

AS: 2 unit examinations

 unit 1-1½ hours 50% of total AS marks, 25% of total A2 marks.

 unit 2-1½ hours 50% of total AS marks, 25% of total A2 marks.

A2: 2 further unit examinations

 unit 3-1½ hours 25% of total A level marks.

 unit 4-2 hours 25% of total A level marks.

Entry requirements

A grade C in English language, a reasonable scientific knowledge and an interest in people.
