Caring for Children BTEC Level 1 Diploma at South Downs College

Course description

Are you interested in working with children? The BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Caring for Children is a full-time course and is suitable for school leavers (16-19 year olds) who are interested in starting a career in Early Years.

Course content

The course contains 12 units including:

  • Physical and Emotional Care Needs of Children
  • Physical Activities
  • Healthy Eating
  • Keeping Children Safe

The course programme also contains additional short courses to enhance employability – for example communication skills and the importance of equality and diversity. You will also have the opportunity to undertake work experience in Early Years settings.


Entry requirements

You will need mainly E grades at GCSE (including maths and English at E or above) and need to demonstrate a keen interest in working in an Early Years working environment.

As you will be working with children, you will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.



The course is assessed through assignments and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of the course can lead to progression on to BTEC First Diploma Children’s Care Learning and Development or an Early Years apprenticeship.

You will be given the opportunity to complete extension tasks to demonstrate working at a higher level and you will be expected to have successfully completed all work experience with good reports.

You must also demonstrate a positive attitude throughout the course.
