Biology A Level at Smithdon High School

Course description

Biology is the study of life; it appears in the news every day, whether it is health and the new vaccines being developed to protect us from disease, the effects of global warming or developments in genetic engineering. Biology covers a vast range of topics which affect our daily lives, from these headline news stories, to how our bodies function or how plants absorb energy from the sun. AS and A - level Biology investigates and explains the scientific processes behind the real world contexts and allows you to develop a way of thinking which both understands and questions the world around you.

Entry requirements

The subject is highly valued by both further education providers and employers. It works well with other Science subjects but is also complemented by Maths and English because of the skills developed in these subjects. Biology is a challenging Science course and students must achieve at least a B grade in Biology GCSE or a B grade in both Core and Additional Science (with the Biology component modules also B grades) in order to meet the entry requirements.
