Geography GCSE at Guru Nanak Sikh Academy

Course description

The aim of the course is to encourage students to take an active role in their learning , developing decision-making and problem solving skills, along with geographical techniques and knowledge. Real world situations and emphasised and fieldwork plays an important part in the course. There will be a minimum of two day-trips. There are four different units to be studied in GCSE Geography; Unit 1 - Climate, the Environment and People * Natural environment * Weather and climate * An issue of international and global concern Unit 2 - Water, Landforms and People * The Hydrosphere * Natural Landforms * The study of a distinctive landforms Unit 3 - People and Places * Inequalities of urban areas * Improving the urban environment * Urban-rural interaction Unit 4 - People, Work and Development * Patterns of work and development * Work and development processes Assessment: Coursework 25% - There are two pieces of coursework- a study and a cross-unit task. A t least one will be based upon field work. The study is worth 15% and will be a piece of extended investigative writing. The cross-unit task is worth 10% and will be based on a research assignment, problem solving or a decision-making exercise. Examination 75% Higher Tier - Grades A* - C Foundation Tier - Grades D - G There are two exam papers . The first is worth 45% and will be based on questions from three of the four units. The second paper is a problem solving exercise and is based on one of the four units. This is worth 30%. Both papers are 90 minutes long

Future opportunities

You could take this course to prepare for advanced level courses such as an A/AS Level in Geography or you may need to strengthen your grades by completing a foundation or intermediate vocational qualification. With further training, you could go into a job related to geography such as a Weather Forecaster, Teacher or Travel Agent You could also go straight into employment and do further training or part time study with the support of your employer.
