GCSE Science Single Award at Calderdale College

Course description

The course gives an introduction into how Science is used to benefit our everyday lives and its application in some science-based occupations. The content covers all three traditional Science disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.

Course content

The Science Single Award qualification is a 6 unit GCSE that includes assessment of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Sessions are taught during the evening and include a range of teaching methods that include both practical and delivery using electronic resources. Candidates must attend a number of assessment dates that are outlined at the start of the qualification by the awarding body. Students will need at least a Level 1 in Maths & English as an entry requirement.

There are three 60-minute written exams scheduled for the end of the course in June – Unit 1 My World, Unit 2 My Family & Home and Unit 3 Making my World a Better Place. Each exam contributes 25% to the final grade. The remaining 25% is a formal assessment of investigative skills. The exam board sets the hypothesis for investigation and it is marked internally. Mock examinations and exam practice will be completed at regular intervals throughout the course to enable progress to be tracked accordingly.

Financial information

In most cases students aged 18 and under who wish to enrol on a full time further education course will have their fees waived.  Students who are aged 19 and over and who wish to enrol on a full time course should contact our Student Services Team on 01422-399367 for more information.

Future opportunities

You may require the GCSE Science qualification to enter employment in Teaching, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Sport and Leisure, Management or Health and Social Care. The GCSE is also a requirement of many Level 3 science related courses, as well as many University Degrees.
