Hospitality BTEC Level 2 at Teignmouth Community School

Course description

If you enjoyed the skills and knowledge you gained in Level 2 (or equivalent) this will further your ability to create your own dishes and learn more about becoming a professional chef. This course will stretch and challenge you by providing valuable insights into what qualities you require to work in a busy, sometimes stressful but ultimately rewarding hospitality industry. This course will also help you develop your catering knowledge, communication and team working skills.

Course content

This qualification has been specifically designed for students to develop the knowledge and skills to prepare themselves for employment in the hospitality industry. Food safety supervision is also included to ensure students understand the importance of kitchen organisation and food safety. The qualification has a range of optional units that allows the student to select further units to enhance their knowledge and skills including: Planning, Preparing, Cooking and Finishing Food, Food and Beverage Service in the Hospitality Industry, Planning and Running a Hospitality Event, Front Office Services in the Hospitality Industry, Contemporary World Food Cooking Skills, Work Experience in Hospitality. Theory and practical classes will underpin the supervisory skills in the hospitality industry which will be used to complete coursework assignments during the two years.

Entry requirements

All students must have achieved at least a Merit /Distinction or equivalent at GCSE. This aspect of the course is the foundation for a career in the catering industry and students will gain hands on experience in food preparation, cooking and food service. Students must have a genuine interest and students will require a positive attitude to both independent working and group work and an excellent attendance record.

Future opportunities

Career opportunities exist in a variety of contexts, including: Chef at a cafe, restaurant or gastro pub or a Trainee/Sous Chef at fine dining restaurants. Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare students for employment, students may choose to further develop their knowledge and skills by undertaking an apprenticeship or continue further studies which would enable students to start their own business or franchise . Higher Education courses could qualify students for teaching, training or assessing posts.
