History AS/A-Level at Greig City Academy
History is a very well respected course by traditional universities. History courses enable you to have an understanding of the world around you and you can formulate discussion and solutions to almost every aspect of the past. It also means that you can argue and analyse which are very important skills in any professional job.
This specification is based upon the completion of 2 units in the first year for the AS and 2 units for the following year to upgrade to an A2 level.
Students MUST do one unit of British History at AS level (this is a government requirement for all History courses).
Unit 1: Russia in Revolution and Stalinist Russia - This unit is an essay writing paper looking at explanation and causation. It covers Tsarist Russia, the events of Revolution and Russia under Stalin.
Unit 2:The British Empire challenged India 1900 - 47 - This unit is concerned with the theory and critical use of historical evidence and the construction and validity of interpretations. It looks at the British Rule of India and why this ended, analysing the roles of Ghandi and Jinnah
At A2 students will have two more units.
Unit 3 coursework and Unit 4 an interpretations unit
The department has not yet chosen the topics of study for these units.
Grade C or above in GCSE English is essential. It is also preferred, although not essential, to have studied History at GCSE.
AS - two 1 hour 25 minute exams in May/ June of your AS year.
History is an important choice for students who are considering a job in Law. Students who do History are looked upon very favourably by the best universities. Jobs that History courses lead to are: Media jobs, Journalism, working for the government, forensic science, medicine, Civil Service, Teaching, Banking – among many others.
