Business AS & A Level at St Brendan's Sixth Form College

Course description

This course is for students who have a keen interest in businesses, how they are set up, grow and become successful. It is a challenging course which is ideal for students who enjoy exam - based study rather than completing coursework assignments.

Course content

First Year study

Topics covered in the First Year include:

  1.  What is business?
  2.  Managers, leadership and decision making
  3.  Decision making to improve marketing performance
  4.  Decision making to improve operational performance
  5.  Decision making to improve financial performance
  6.   Decision making to improve human resource performance

The second year of the course examines larger businesses and what they need to do to be successful

Second Year study
  1. Analysing the strategic position of a business
  2. Choosing strategic direction
  3. Strategic methods: how to pursue strategies
  4. Managing strategic change

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grades A*-C or at point 4-9 (including English Language). Level 2 vocational qualifications (e.g. BTEC/OCR) must be a merit grade or above and will count as 1 GCSE equivalent.
  • Business Studies GCSE not needed


Teachers adopt an active approach to learning with students being encouraged to take part in group work, presentations, class discussion and independent research. The course requires students to be able to carry out a number of different types of calculations and students will be required to complete calculation workbooks outside class.

The course is wholly exam-based over the two years and there is no coursework.

Financial information

During the course students may be charged for printing. All residential and day trips will require students to pay should they wish to participate. 

There will be the opportunity for students to attend an overseas residential trip to find out how business works in practise. Previous visits have included New York, Disneyland Paris, Cadbury World in Birmingham and Harry Potter World.

Future opportunities

A-level Business is a popular course choice and is a relevant subject to the world today and has enabled past students to move on to a wide range of university courses and careers including: Economics, Business Management, Journalism, Accounts and Finance, Insurance and Computing.

Further information

It is not advisable to take Business and Economics, as separate subjects, as some universities consider them to be too similar in content to be accepted as two separate subjects.
