Bench Joinery Diploma (City & Guilds) at Solihull College & University Centre

Course description

This course is ideal for you if you have completed a Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery.

It will build on your knowledge and develop your practical skills to an industry recognised level.

Course content

During the course you will study the following modules:

201/601 - Health, safety and welfare in construction
301/ 701 - Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work
308 - Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery
309 - Manufacture shaped doors and frames
310 - Manufacture stairs with turns

Maths, English and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.

Entry requirements

To enrol on this course you need at least a Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery and a suitable reference and interview.

To pass this course you will have to successfully complete all practical and theory assessments and pass an on line end test. All assessments are carried out by qualified assessors to the required qualification standard.

Future opportunities

Upon completion of the course you can choose to take a variety of different avenues into either higher education or employment.

Further information

You will be required to provide safety boots and appropriate clothes to wear in the workshop.

If you work in a Joinery workshop you may be able to work towards a NVQ 3 in Bench Joinery also.

Learners who have a high standard of attendance and have demonstrated a positive attitude can be recommended for any available apprenticeships.

    • Woodlands Campus

      An £8.5 million expansion of our Woodlands Campus now incorporates a new state of the art specialist centre for multi-craft, bricklaying, painting and decorating, plastering, carpentry and an expanded motor vehicle training facility. A new sports pitch also enhances the existing sports facilities.

      The new Engineering and Construction facility houses twelve new workshops; six for construction and six for motor vehicle. The rooms accommodate an MOT/motor sport workshop; an engine workshop and further rooms for decorating, plastering and brickwork.

      Woodlands has purpose-built engineering workshops as well as commercial-standard hair and beauty salons. Our IT facilities, learning resource centres and library are also first-rate.

      We also offer a selection of higher education courses at our Woodlands Campus so you can continue your studies with us.

      Via Bus or Train

      The main bus terminal in north Solihull is located in Chelmsley Wood centre. The number 94, 676, 694, 71, 966 and 966A stop at the main terminal with the number 94 stopping on Auckland Drive. The nearest train stations are Marston Green or Water Orton station both located approximately 20 minutes away.

      The College has free car parking facilities on-site.
