English Language A Level at Northgate High School

Course description

At AS Level, students will be required to study a diverse range of texts and analyse how language is used to create meaning and representation. There will be a strong focus on the impacts of contextual factors on language and students will study the impact of occupation, gender and technology on the use of our language. During A Level studies, students will build on skills acquired at AS Level. Students will learn about child language acquisition and language change. During their second year, students will undertake non-examination assessment in the form of an investigation and a piece of original writing.

Course content

Discussion, study and close analysis of a range of written and spoken texts. The workshop style of teaching and learning gives students academic confidence as well as knowledge about the English language. The course is designed to encourage students to progress their study skills to prepare them for further study or work based endeavours

Entry requirements

Subject specific entry requirements: GCSE grade 6 in English Language.

Future opportunities

Degrees in English Language and Linguistics will generally require English Language A Level study. Potential career paths include journalism, publishing, print media, P.R, broadcasting and law based work.
