Music Technology A Level at Corfe Hills School

Course description

Unit 3: (6MT03) Music Technology Practical Unit. This develops your skills acquired in Unit 1 and extends these to include a composition task. It involves a detailed study of The Development of Technology based Music. You will carry out the work for this unit under controlled conditions completing three tasks which together make the Music for your Technology Portfolio 2: Task 3A: Sequenced Integrated Performance, Task 3B: Multi-track Recording and Task 3C: Composing using Music Technology.  Each task will be submitted as a designated track.

Unit 4: (6MT04) Analysing and Producing. You will be expected to demonstrate your knowledge of music and the principles of music technology through a series of written commentaries, manipulations and production tasks using material on an examination paper, which is then recorded onto an audio CD.

Course content

Learning composition skills. You will improve your skills, and produce a composition using the full range of techniques you have learned and developed during the course.

Assessment

There are no January modules. All written exams will be during the summer examination period. Coursework is due for completion in mid-May and the completed CDs sent to examiners for assessment.

Unit 3:  Music Technology Practical Assessment. The three pieces of coursework are assessed by examiners, along with supporting documentation outlining the techniques and processes the student has applied.  You will have an audio CD, which will contain a series of music files to be imported into music production software. This is worth 60% of A2.

Unit 4: Analysing and Producing. This assessment will take the form of a two hour examination. There are two sections in the examination paper and students have to complete both.  You will also have an examination paper which will include some or all of the CD tracks notated as conventional staff notation, editing grids or numerical data. This is worth 40% of A2.
