Additional Science (Double) GCSE at Christ The King College

Course description

GCSE Additional Science (Year 10 and Year 11). Following these two separate but linked courses which include components of Biology, Chemistry and Physics will lead to two GCSE grades. This route is preferable for students who will follow additional study in one of the sciences as it is a preparation for ‘A’ level study.


Course content

Core C1 – Atomic structure, metals, oil and chemicals from our planet.
Additional C2 – Chemical bonding, calculating amounts, rates of reaction and electrolysis.
Core P1 – Energy transfer, generating electricity, waves and electromagnetic waves.
Additional P2 – Motion, forces, electricity and radioactivity.
Core B1 – Diet, microbes, coordination, medicines, adaption, genetic engineering and evolution.
Additional B2 – Cells, photosynthesis, enzymes, respiration, inheritance and species.


GCSE Additional science has three externally assessed units (one for each of the sciences) of one hour duration at both Foundation and Higher Tier. In addition there is an internally assessed Controlled Assessment centred on experimental

Future opportunities

A GCSE Additional Science grade B or above is regarded as a good basis for further study in the Sciences at A level. These also provide a good foundation for a future career in a Science related industry.
