Course description

Mathematics is a beautiful and exciting subject which underpins many other areas of learning. It has been fundamental to the development of the modern world and has impacted on everything ever invented. The ability to reason and think logically is crucial in every area of study and employment. The mathematics course will fine-tune your thinking skills making you a sought after candidate for university places and in employment. Having A-Level mathematics on your C.V. will make you stand out from the crowd.

Course content

Mathematics can be divided into two main areas. Firstly, ‘pure’ mathematics, which concerns algebra and geometry, and ‘applied mathematics’, which, as the name suggests, applies techniques in pure mathematics to solve problems in the world about us. To complement these areas, modules of ‘mechanics’ will be studied (study of motion and forces).

AS – completion of three modules in Year 12:

  • Core (pure) 1 & 2
  • Statistics 1

A2 – completion of three additional modules in Year 13:

  • Core (pure) 3 & 4
  • Statistics 2 Mechanics 1

Entry requirements

Students will need to gain an A grade in mathematics at GCSE to pursue this subject at AS and A2 Level.

The course is modular with three examinations per year (six for further mathematics) taking place in June which are equally weighted and last 90 minutes. There are no controlled assessment elements in the course.

Future opportunities

Mathematicians are highly valued by both further education institutions and employers alike. Opportunities exist in industry, banking and finance as accountants and actuaries as well as in management.
